Photodrifting is a New York City based collective of creative professionals who document and share their lives through photography. The primary hub for this activity is photdrifting.com, the group's shared webspace. The pictures are not usually related, nor do they have any concurrent theme or style, instead, Photo Drifting represents different views of life in New York. Its contributors provide an intimate and subjective vantage on daily life, highlighted by the website's distinctive visual time line put together by founder; Jon-Paul Rodriguez.

For the title of the upcoming show with Photo Drifting, an anonymous queue was taken from a graffitti addition to the vinyl signage of Eye Level Gallery. A random vandal crossed out the word "Eye" replacing it with "Pie", forming an unintentional direction for the photo drifting show. "Pie", in Spanish, meaning "foot", became an impromptu focus for the show. Photo Drifters focused on imagery taken on foot to channel their visual perspectives of street level aesthetics with the BQE as a focal point.

Please join us this next Saturday to see what the drifters came up with. It is also important to mention that during the exhibition the photographs will be often replaced, inspired by their own website's dynamic.

Eye Level BQE

Not so long ago, during our last opening for Malcolm Stuart, someone crossed out our name on the window with a marker and wrote the word "Pie" instead of Eye Level.
Pie, being usually a baked dish of fruit, meat and vegetables, in Spanish also stands for ; Foot. Taking that Queue, we have decided to have set this as the principal element to consider when you submit your photos. Photos that you are able to capture while being on your feet and anywhere along the BQE. Anything else is completely up to you.

Our Exhibition Space is located at Victor Osborne's workshop, with nearly 1 year of showing work as EYE LEVEL BQE we have been focusing in showcasing work by artists who live/work in Brooklyn or Queens Area. Eye Level is Mainly a window space somehow located in the realm of the public art rather than a regular gallery, where a very diverse crowd constantly seem to bring them a feeling of discovery and curiosity which draws them to the artwork presented.

Dear PHOTODRIFTERS: if you get a chance, I would advice you, before you start letting your finger press the shutter of your cameras, to visit Eye Level, and sit outside and observe the interaction that takes place. This would be the first step, non required, but as a great starting point.

Regarding the rest of the guidelines, it is very important for you to follow them, we want to show our best work. And Please don't hesitate on contacting either JP/I with any question, suggestions or inquiries. Thank you so much to everybody for participating and really looking forward to your photographs!

BQE FACTS : When the Brooklyn - Queens Expressway was built, it provided Brooklyn direct access to the Triborough Bridge via Queens Boulevard and Horace Harding Boulevard, and to the 38th Street (Queens-Midtown) Tunnel via the Meeker Avenue Bridge and Borden Avenue, also gives Queens a direct route to the tunnel.

This just in from our friends at Eye Level.

Save your friday’s lunch money, because Malcolm just airbrushed some shirts.
For the first experiment he spelled the word “peace” in sign language, but with the “sexy long nail” hands that he uses through out the show.

Here is the pic for the first one he did. He will making some more for the opening, and will also take orders for custom made shirts.

Requirements: They basically need to be at the most 5 letters.And can be ordered at the opening with a special discount. How much is the discount you might ask, you will find out on saturday.

Remember the opening is this Saturday at 364 Leonard Street.

Eye Level Gallery

Gariela, a PDer, curates shows for a gallery in williamsburg called Eye Level. Its a dope gallery on 364 Leonard st.
Gabriela would like us to do a show in her gallery in mid-April!!
They are having a show called Pattern People, for the artist, Malcolm Stuart, which opens March 7th, 8-11PM.
We should all go, to see the space and get an idea of the possibilites. Plus there will be music by Dj Funlap and booze! Whos down??
In regards to the show we would like it to have a theme. The theme is Really loose and needs firming up, but its going to be something involving everything and anything between Brooklyn and Queens and the actual Brooklyn, Queens Expressway.
So we need to have a meeting to discuss all the good news!! We need ideas for the theme of the show (keeping bk, queens and the bqe in mind) and we also need to discuss printing our work, etc etc, so start thinking about it.
So whens the meeting? i dunno yet! ha! stay tuned. if its not this friday the 6th, then it will be sometime between the 17th and the 20th. I will let yall know as soon as Gabriela and I figure out what works.

I spoke to Pierre today and he has made his selections for the March Edition of Ninja Magazine and here they are. Although he loved all of the photos submitted, he has gone with 7 images and is giving us 8 pages.

Ninja Magazine will be giving us a 12-page spread in there March issue!

They are based in Paris and between their printed magazine and their online downloadable magazine, they have over one million readers.

You can read their press release here.

I've been speaking with Pierre, the Publication Director and what he really digs our vibe and wants us to represent NYC.

He is looking for a mix of NYC urban imagery and portraits.

The pictures submitted have to be exclusive, meaning if it has ever been published or has ever showed up on a website (including photodrifting) you cant use it.

Everyone can email me 1-2 pictures, 500px on the longest side, preferably color. They should be your best representation of NYC urban or NYC portraiture.

Pierre will choose up to 12 pictures for the magazine.

I need this stuff asap, so just email me a yes or no if you would like to be included, that way I know who to count on.

Here's a free alternative to Photoshop for those of you who don't want to cough up the G stack's or who don't want to download a pirated copy.

Its called SUMO PAINT, and the cool thing about it is that its flash based and runs in your browser, so as long as you have an internet connection you can Photoshop your pictures no matter where you are.

They just have to be in the dark.

DIY - Create your own Bokeh. . .

Bokeh is an adaptation from a a Japanese word meaning blur. In photography this term is used to describe the quality of the areas in the picture which are not in focus.

When referring to Bokeh, we can distinguish some of it characteristics:

- Is the light/dark gradient smooth or sharp?

- What shape will a small dot of light take what it is in the Bokeh area? (mirror lenses for example, create a bagel like Bokeh)

We can play with those two variants to create a special Bokeh.

You will need :

One large aperture lens
One sheet of black paperboard

2. In the middle of the filter the wanted bokeh shape is cut out - in out example a heart is used. I’m not sure how big a hole the shape can be. But you can check it right away by just looking through the viewfinder. On the 50mm lens @ F1.8 a 15mm heart gives a metering value equal to F3.2, so it can probably be a little bigger (you can use a puncher or cut it by hand).

3. Set your camera to its lowest aperture value (completely open).

Here are two shots to demonstrate this technique - one with a bare lens and the other with the hearted hood. see more shots here and here (I leave it as an exercise to tell which is which :)

Here are the parameters for the example shown on the right:

Lens - Canon 50mm F1.8
"Lens hood" Diameter: 70mm (2.75 inch)
Hole diameter: 15mm (0.6inch)

Make Your Own 3D Camera for $15 or Less...

Depth perception: wonder of evolution, miracle of sensory perception, and envy of the cyclops.

It’s one of those things you wouldn’t miss until it’s gone, like toes, toothpaste, and trees. That’s why 3D photos amaze us: they remind us about this incredible superpower we had totally forgotten we had.

But it gets even better! 3D photography is surprisingly easy to do on your own and doesn’t even require special glasses. Heres how to make your own 3D camera on the cheap.

How Come 3D Pictures Look 3D?

Here’s how depth perception works: our eyes are spaced 2-3 inches apart, so they see images from slightly different angles. The brain then merges those two images to make one three-dimensional image. The disparity between the two images is what helps us figure out how far away an object is.

Taking two pictures of the same thing, spaced as far apart as a pair of eyes, will create the same effect. If you look at those pictures in a particular way, your brain’s programming will take over and create the illusion of three dimensions.

Make Your Own 3D Camera

What You’ll Need:

Two disposable cameras
Duct tape
Scissors (optional)

Step 1: Turn one of the cameras upside down to get the two lenses as close together as possible (lenses aren’t usually located in the center of the camera). Line the cameras up so the lenses are on the same level.

Step 2: Tape the cameras together with duct tape. Don’t cover up the shutter buttons or winding mechanisms.

Step 3: Go out and shoot! To take a picture, press both shutter buttons at the same time.

Step 4: Just have fun and accept that this method won’t give you pro results.

Since the lenses are about 4 inches apart and human eyes are usually 2.5 to 3 inches apart, the 3D effect won’t be perfect. And besides, it’s a disposable camera, so treat it as a toy and just have a good time.

Tips:

Having subjects in the foreground and the background will show more of the 3D effect.
Just like any good 3D horror movie, the best shots show something coming out of the picture at you.
Remember that the cameras won’t focus closer than about three feet.
If you need to use flash, turn on the flashes for both cameras and expect things to come out a little weird.

How To View Stereographs (Method 1)

The simplest way to see the stereo effect is to view the two images side-by-side. Cross your eyes until the two images become three images. Focus on the image in the center and you’ll be able to see the 3D effect. It’s tricky to get the hang of, and feels extremely weird, but it does work. Click on the photo at left to see it larger- it’s easier to do this at large sizes.

Like any photography niche, stereoscopy involves a billion little accessories you could spend money on. Special slide mounts, viewers and print mats all clamor for your cash.

Despite the array of fancy gear, the only thing you really need to view stereo prints is a little $4 plastic viewer, an x-acto knife and some tape. Trim your prints to 3×3″, tape them together side-by-side and look at them through the little viewer. Whoa, crrraaaazy three-dimensional photos! Spooky-pants!

Of course, if you simply must buy something fancy, there are mailable viewers that you can send to your friends along with a couple of prints. Whoa, intercontinental three-dimensional spooky-pants!

How To View Stereographs (Method 2)

You can simulate the 3D effect on your computer by making an animated version of your stereo photos (a.k.a. “wiggling”). There are loads of examples at Lenticulations.com.

Here’s how to do it in Photoshop:
Step 1: Scan your stereo images.

Step 2: Select the first image, copy and paste it into a new file. Select the 2nd image, copy and paste it into the same file. You’ll now have two layers on top of each other.

Step 3: Open the animation window (Window -> Animation). There will be one frame by default. Make a second frame by clicking on the little “page” icon at the bottom of the animation toolbar.

Step 4: Click on the second frame. Turn off the top layer by clicking on the “eye” icon. Now the frames should show one image in the first frame and the other image in the second frame.

Step 5: Set the interval by clicking on the frame where it says “0 sec.” Change the delay interval to 0.1 seconds. Do this for both frames. Click the “play” icon to see how your animation looks. If it’s “wiggling” too fast, change to interval to 0.2 or 0.3.

Step 6: When you like what you see, save for web (File -> Save For Web) as a GIF file. Ta-dah! All done.

T I L T S H I F T M A K E R

TiltShiftMaker allows you to mimic the depth of field blurring that using a tilt-shift lens would create. You upload a picture from your computer or from the web and from there you can adjust size of the focal area and it's location in the picture. Additionally you can tweak the colors to be a little more vivid. How cool is that!

What’s the contest about?

The contest is based off of a theme that you will photograph.

In this case the theme and topic of contest is “poverty and homelessness”.

I don’t mean for this theme to exploit the poor and hungry, instead, acknoledge them as one of the major facets that makes New York…well… New York.

How long do I have?

The contest will go on for 2 weeks starting on 01.10.09 at 12:00AM and end on 01.24.09 at 11:59PM.

How do I submit?

Just upload all your pictures just as you would any other day (by date)along with whatever other pictures you might be posting

BUT

tag any photos you would like to be considered for the contest with “contest1” (spelled exactly like that) and “your name” in quotations. At the end of the deadline, I will then collect all submissions and tally scores.

If you do not tag the picture with “contest1” and “your name” it will not be considered.

How many can I submit?

You can submit as many pictures as you would like as long as it goes with the theme, but please only submit your BEST photos.

How do I win?

Each picture submitted will automatically count for 1 point.

Additional points will be given by the judges. The way this works is, each judge will pick what they think are the top 3 best photos in the contest. Points will then then be given accordingly.

1^st place will be worth 3 points

2^nd place will be worth 2 points

3^rd place will be worth 1 point

Then all the points will be added together.

I know that might sound complicated, here’s an example:

If “Joe Shmoe” submits 7 pictures to the contest he will automatically accumulate 7 points.

Then…

Joe gets 2 of his pictures voted 1^st place (worth 3 points each) and 3 pictures voted 2^nd place (worth 2 points each). He would then have 12 additional points.

7 – points for number of pics submitted

+12 – additional points received from votes

19 – total points

Joe would have a total of 19 points.

Get it?!

The person with the most points WINS!

Who will judge?

US!!!! We will all judge, but we absolutely CANNOT vote for ourselves!!

Everyone who submitted to the contest will be responsible to vote for their top 3 favorite pictures other then their own.
